BPC Welcomes Biden Immigration Reset

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Theresa Cardinal Brown, director of immigration and cross-border policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, on the Biden administration’s day-one actions on immigration:

“We welcome the Biden administration’s introduction of broad immigration legislation and the issuance of several executive orders, including continued protections for Dreamers. These actions are leading a needed reset of our immigration system.

“The last four years have seen increasing division and polarization around immigration, even though a majority of Americans believe immigrants are good for the country and support common-sense immigration reforms. The fact that these actions come in the very first hours of President Biden’s tenure indicate the strong priority his administration will place on this issue.

“We hope the new administration will work collaboratively with Congress to develop and enact true bipartisan immigration reform. We need reforms that do several things: address the status of unauthorized immigrants in the country, create a comprehensive program to manage immigration at our borders, and modernize the legal immigration system to support our future economic and workforce needs.

“We look forward to working with the administration and Congress to achieve these goals.”
